The Brief

We were contacted by the main contractor for the project to build a sustainable detention basin for a pumping station. The substation was in a very remote location, with a 5-mile-long access road. The detention basin had to blend in with its surroundings and be environmentally friendly. Additional challenges included the physical installation of the liner.

Our Approach

We reviewed the entire project and opted to install a Geosynthetic Clay (Bentonite) Liner.

The Geosynthetic Clay Liner is comparatively far easier to lay than polymer liners as they do not require a specialist installation team or specialist welding equipment, which was beneficial for this remote site. We even delivered the liner is small rolls so that they could be laid easily even in heavy wind or other adverse weather conditions.

The Geosynthetic Clay Liner also is a self-sealing membrane, which means it seals itself around any punctures to the material. This resulted in a shorter installation time without the need for taping or onsite welding.

The Outcome

The choice of the Geosynthetic Clay Liner was highly effective and added significant value to this project. The liner resulted in simple and efficient installation and increased the longevity and durability of the installation due to its ability to ‘heal’ itself.

This resulted in a detention basin that was sustainable, functional, and blended into the surroundings.

We were called in to deal with soil erosion issues and to help with previous failed remediation attempts. There was significant silt formation, polluted water, embankment erosion and lack of vegetation, which…
RJ McLeod Inverness approached us with a requirement for pond liners and a drainage ditch to be constructed adjacent to the new road with relatively steep embankments. Additionally, they wanted the quick…
