Bam Nuttal Blackhillock Sub Station

  • Application: Sustainable Urban Drainage
  • Market: Environmental and Ecological
  • Product: LLDPE Liner, Non-woven Geotextile
  • Main Contractor: Bam Nuttal/Siemens
  • Location: Keith

The Brief

Blackhillock Substation forms part of a major reinforcement to the transmission network serving the north of Scotland. This is required to enable the proposed wind, wave and tidal generation sites to connect to the grid.

Bam Nuttall were faced with the task of excavating and lining two storm water/firewater ponds, with one at either side of the substation.

Each pond was in the region of 3,000m2 and the initial proposed material was a Butyl liner accompanied by Protection Geotextiles.

Bam wanted a robust and attractive solution that also provided cost-saving benefits.

Our Approach

Stratec reviewed the requirements and proposed a 1mm Low Linier Density Polyethylene Geomembrane. This provided the contractor with a flexible yet far more robust membrane for the pond linings which does not need any further maintenance after installation. It is also a highly cost-effective option.

Stratec also proposed a High Strength Non-woven Protection Geotextile to be used in conjunction with the LLDPE liner for the pond. This was placed both above and below the LLDPE liner to provide extra protection against punctures to the liner. This improved the effectiveness and the longevity of the installation.

The Outcome

Due to the critical nature of the project the client was initially cautious of changing from the specified product.  Stratec were able to provide all the necessary information to satisfy any queries and also provided a large cost saving on the material.

Bam Nuttall successfully installed over 6,000m2 1mm LLDPE Geomembrane and over 12,000m2 of the N4400 Non-woven Protection Geotextile, all provided by Stratec.

Additionally, Stratec supplied over 22,500m2 of N1400 Non-woven Geotextile for filter drains, Geocell and other Accessories for temporary haul roads for the project.

We were called in to deal with soil erosion issues and to help with previous failed remediation attempts. There was significant silt formation, polluted water, embankment erosion and lack of vegetation, which…
RJ McLeod Inverness approached us with a requirement for pond liners and a drainage ditch to be constructed adjacent to the new road with relatively steep embankments. Additionally, they wanted the quick…
