Bam, working on the Shetland HVDC Substation project needed to provide reinforcement in an area around 4000sqm to create a temporary settlement pond, along with a floating road constructed across a marshy area with over 3 meters of peat underfoot.
Their two initial orders were placed during the height of the coronavirus pandemic and required the urgent delivery of the material to their remote site in the Shetland Isles. This involved a 12 hour shipment via ferry, along with the extra precautions that needed to be taken due to the coronavirus pandemic e.g Coronavirus testing.
Stratec provided around 6000sqm of HDPE/LDPE liner for the temporary settlement pond. These Liners were chosen according to the requirements for flexibility, UV resistance and chemical resistance where required along with being high quality and effective for use in temporary settlement ponds.
We also supplied a total of nearly 30000sqm of various geotextiles and geogrids for the floating road construction.
The combination of the Geogrid and the Non-woven geotextile helped reinforce the soft ground and enhanced its strength for the floating road.
The real benefit of using Stratec on this project was the ability to adapt to the situation by delivering quickly and efficiently to this remote location whilst allowing for any contingencies with the whole are in lockdown We had to allow for the use of alternative solutions if anyone were to be refused entry to the Shetlands due to the stringent testing in place.
We were able to provide Bam with a 48 hour delivery service which meant their operations were able to continue on schedule without interruption.
Stratec were able to supply Bam with the material required for the project dealing in a quick and efficient manner whilst dealing with external pressures such a difficulty presented by the coronavirus pandemic and tight shipping schedules.
The client was extremely impressed with Stratec and we received the following comment from the Section Engineer on site.
“the help and support I received was second to none. The team were very helpful, knowledgeable and easy to work with. They have a large product range and were able to advise on materials to best fit my requirements on site […] The team couldn’t have been more helpful and were willing to work with us to get materials to our remote site, in a very quick turnaround period.”
