Blackfordby Balancing Ponds

  • Application: Suds Ponds and Water Storage
  • Market: Housing
  • Product: Geosynthetic Clay Liner
  • Main Contractor: DAB Civil Engineering Contractors Ltd/ Davidsons Developments
  • Location: Blackforby, Derbyshire

The Brief

Stratec were brought on to this Project to provide liners for two balancing ponds for the nearby housing development. The balancing ponds were to act as part of the Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) to avoid excessive waterflow into the surrounding stream.

Our Approach

Stratec proposed the installation of a Geosynthetic Clay (Bentonite) Liner for both balancing ponds.

A Geosynthetic Clay Liner is quick and easy to fit due to the fact there is no need for any specialist personnel or machinery to install it. Once fitted, the Bentonite forms an impermeable gel seal which makes an excellent pond sealant. It is also described as being ‘self-healing’ as it swells around any punctures in the material to prevent leakages.

Additionally, sodium bentonite is environmentally safe and does not affect the water, livestock, or wildlife, so is an environmentally suitable option.

The Outcome

Stratec provided 5000m2 of our Stratec 4500 Geosynthetic Clay Liner to line both ponds. We supplied this material through Dab Civils who were the nominated sub-contractor for Davidsons Developments.

The use of the Geosynthetic Clay Liner meant a faster and more efficient installation with no need for specialist personnel or equipment, making it an attractive choice for the client. The liner is also extremely durable and provided longevity for the project.

The two balancing points meant that any rainwater run off or overflow could be detained in the ponds and drain sustainably into the nearby stream slowly to reduce the risk of flooding.

We were called in to deal with soil erosion issues and to help with previous failed remediation attempts. There was significant silt formation, polluted water, embankment erosion and lack of vegetation, which…
RJ McLeod Inverness approached us with a requirement for pond liners and a drainage ditch to be constructed adjacent to the new road with relatively steep embankments. Additionally, they wanted the quick…
