The Brief
We were contacted by Kinnitty Mountain Bike Trails LTD for assistance with a project in 2020. They were building an 80km bike trail. Parts of the trail covered extremely marshy ground which needed to be strengthened and stabilised.
The contractor was using a geotextile but also wanted to use a less traditional option than a boardwalk for the areas of soft ground.
Our Approach
After reviewing the requirements for the site, we suggested the use of a Geocell in conjunction with a non-woven geotextile on the parts of the trail that were very marshy.
We provided Stratec Geocell 100 for the project and also provided Stratec heavy duty J pins to secure the material.
Geocell is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyester or other polymer material. Geocell is a long-term solution designed to protect the ground from soil erosion by creating a uniform layer of ground. It is ideal for use on steep slopes and embankments.
The Outcome
The use of the Geocell meant that once it is backfilled it creates a uniform layer. This in turn strengthened and stabilized the ground and resulted in a platform that was capable of withstanding the weight needed for the bike track.
The Geocell provided value to the project and increased the durability and longevity of the installation.
