The Brief

Stratec were called on to help with the South Cathkin Landfill site in Glasgow. It occupies a total of 144 hectares and has been operational since the year 2000. Final restorations took place in 2017 when they lined the nine stormwater ponds on site.

There were high levels of silt in the ponds, soil erosion on the embankments and the client wanted to establish vegetation on the site before winter.

Our Approach

After reviewing the site, we concluded that each stormwater pond was to be lined with Bio-degradable Erosion Blankets. For this particular specification, we supplied 100% Straw Pre-seeded Blankets which have an approximate twelve month degrade lifetime

Stratec’s Pre-Seeded Erosion Blankets are constructed of a layer of straw encapsulated on both sides by a lightweight, biodegradable netting and a carrier paper pre-impregnated with the relevant seed and mulch mix to establish rapid growth.

The Outcome

The Erosion Blankets were an effective choice for this project as they were able to stop the movement of the soil on the embankments, which prevented any silt formation in the stormwater ponds.

The Erosion Blankets also functioned as protection for the ground beneath from adverse weather during the upcoming winter season, such as heavy rain or wind, which can also lead to soil migration and silt formation.

The Erosion Blankets also had the added benefit of being seeded which helped accelerate the rate at which vegetation was established which was extremely important for the client.

We were called in to deal with soil erosion issues and to help with previous failed remediation attempts. There was significant silt formation, polluted water, embankment erosion and lack of vegetation, which…
RJ McLeod Inverness approached us with a requirement for pond liners and a drainage ditch to be constructed adjacent to the new road with relatively steep embankments. Additionally, they wanted the quick…
