Erosion control involves the protection of vulnerable ground from factors such as heavy wind or rain that could result in soil migration and ground erosion in a range of different settings such as agriculture, temporary works and watercourse embankment. Stratec’s erosion control products include Biodegradable and Permanent Erosion Blankets.
Erosion blankets explained: Erosion Blankets are mats that are used in areas of exposed soil in order to protect the ground beneath them from possible further soil migration and erosion. There are four different types of Erosion Blanket, both permanent and biodegradable.
Erosion Blankets work by protecting the ground beneath them from weather conditions like heavy snow, rain, and wind with the end goal of helping to re-establish vegetation, which acts as a natural protection barrier for soil and helps prevent erosion.
They work by slowing the rate at which water passes over them which in turn helps prevent the soil being washed away and causing silt formation. They also retain water which helps establish vegetation at an increased rate.
Type 1 Blankets are low-cost biodegradable mats made from woven jute and breakdown over 1-2 years, while Type 2 blankets are made of coir mesh and degrade over 2-3 years. Type 4 Blankets are thicker and made of 100% coir or a mix of coir and straw stitched together between two binding layers of photodegradable polymer mesh. These can last from 2-3 years.

Permanent erosion blankets explained: Permanent erosion blankets won’t decompose and, therefore, provide long-term erosion control solutions for installations.
Most mats have netting on both sides with the fibre material contained between the layers. The double-sided design ensures the fibres remain securely attached.
Type 3 erosion blankets, also called turf reinforcement mats, are typically made from Polypropylene. They have a closely packed matrix of fibres that are thermally bonded together to create a tough and flexible membrane designed to be backfilled with soil after installation. These are permanent solutions and can last for up to 25 years.

Rock rolls explained: Filled Rock Rolls are used as a flexible robust alternative to permanent revetments such as Rock Rip Rap or Gabion Baskets and Mattresses. They are ideal for erosion protection in high energy watercourses where a purely biodegradable approach would not be adequate. Used on their own, they form high strength, impact resistant scour protection.
Working with the natural processes present in the watercourse, sediment will accumulate in the voids of the Rock Rolls delivering habitats for plants, insects and invertebrates within the river or stream.
Rock Rolls are manufactured from a 3mm high strength polyethylene braided knotted net and formed into tubular bags, filled with 40-75mm weather and frost resistant granite they can be used on their own to provide on-going erosion protection or as part of a bioengineering solution to create a fully vegetated revetment.

Rock bags explained: Kyowa Filter Units, known in the UK as Rockbags, are used to protect riverbanks, coastal areas, bridges and monopiles from scour damage. Designed for use in marine environments, they are constructed of synthetic mesh and filled with aggregate stone.
They are typically deployed at offshore wind and oil and gas developments for subsea assets protection, while also providing erosion protection for river embankments, bridges and foreshores in the marine civil engineering sector.
